Google Sight Seeing

Google has hugely expanded the areas of the world that it covers with satellite imagery. Egypt, Iraq, mainland Europe and the UK have all now got satellite coverage to a lesser or greater degree. You can now go see sights like Buckingham Palace or the Arc de Triomphe from the comfort of your own swivelchairs. Iraq in particular seems to have a large number of high-zoom areas. I just looked up the Baghdad Parade Grounds where Saddam used to take the salute and other towns like Fallujah are also there.

some other good google map links :

  • Hollywood sign
  • Uluru
  • Teotihuacán Pyramids
  • Sugar Loaf Mountain, Rio
  • My house

    This is so compulsive!

    Google Maps

At the bleeding edge of online vector graphics, this is truly remarkable :

    maps.google.com/

you can view sattelite imagery of anywhere in the world, and try doing a search for say "Pizzas in woking" .. the response time is staggeringly quick.

    Seattle

Spent the last week in Seattle doing the "QuickStart" consultancy training at Avanade's HQ.

Would love to spend some more time in Seattle; seems to be creativity oozing out of every corner - loads of technology startups, and the music scene was truly rocking.

Home of the original Starbucks Coffee houses (you quite literally see one on every corner)

    Amusingly titled stripshows

    Fat-americans

and ofcourse the home of major league baseball

    Kia Orana

After a couple of belated attempts to write some fancy generic photoviewer in C# laziness got the better of me and i've found it far easier to create the thing in PowerPoint, and export it as a webpage.

Take a look at the one Ingunn did on our trip to the Cook Islands recently
